Turkish grocery market catching up - July 2009

In comparison with countries of the European Union, the grocery retail sector in Turkey is relatively underdeveloped. Despite the fact that today’s market leader, Migros Turk, was set up in the late 50s of the twentieth century, and some other prominent local companies were established in the 80s, and despite the entry of a few worldwide-known retail chains in the 90s, a significant portion of the retail market still remains in the hands of small, independent retailers. Traditional family-run outlets (bakkals), open-air markets and bazaars are especially important in rural areas and small towns where modern grocery formats do not yet exist.
