Sales of mobile phones down 32% in Q3 2009

In Q3 2009 sales of mobile phone handsets fell by 31.6% year on year to 7.1 million units, according to
Euroset. In the first nine months of the year 17.7 million handsets were sold, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 34.1%. Overall in 2009 sales are expected to amount to 26 million items, a fall of 28% in comparison with 2008. Low sales have been caused by the financial crisis and the resultant drop in demand.
According to Euroset, the market of mobile phones will begin to recover in 2010, and sales are expected to grow by between 3% and 15%. Sales are estimated to reach pre-crisis level – approximately 36 million phone handsets – in 2011.
Among mobile phone producers,
Nokia accounts for the highest share of the market with 38.7%, followed by
Samsung (35.2%) and
LG (12.4%).
