Retail chains expand in Ukraine

Retail chains operating in Ukraine continue to expand, albeit at a lower speed than before the economic crisis, according to research conducted by Astrum Investment Management and cited by
Liga Business Inform.

Real-Hypermarket Ukraine, a part of
Metro Group,
will launch its first
Real hypermarket in Odessa. The opening of the 8,500 m² store will represent an investment of $31m. Further expansion plans are to be unveiled at the beginning of 2010. The company had previously considered purchasing 10 sites in Ukraine with a view to building its outlets there.
Eco, the operator of 69
Eco-Market supermarkets, plans to open five new stores before the end of 2009 and, over the next two years, the company will focus on expanding into central and eastern Ukraine.
By the end of 2009
Furshet, grocery retailer, will add three new supermarkets to its current chain of 109 units. In addition, the retailer is to open a minimum of five new stores in the country in 2010.
