Auchan to bring city hypermarkets to Ukraine
2012-01-25
The French retailer
Auchan is planning to launch "city hypermarkets" in Ukraine under its banners and is currently seeking to acquire premises of 7,000-7,500 m² (5,000 m² retail area). The city hypermarkets will be one third smaller than the current Auchan hypermarket stores in Ukraine. Similar stores to these planned in Ukraine have been in operation in Russia since 2007 under the
Auchan-City brand. Apart from separate assets, the company plans to open their stores in retail centres as well.
Currently, Auchan operates eight hypermarkets in Ukraine, occupying 15,000 m² on average. The company entered the Ukrainian market in 2007 and is the fifth-ranked retailer there by volume of sales.
Among the similar to the city hypermarket format, in Ukraine, Auchan will have to compete with
Novus,
Silpo,
Narodny,
Furshet,
Eco-market and
Tavria-V.
